WordPress updates

This, as many other sites run on wordpress. And you just have to update, as with everything, there are vulnerabilities and you need the fixes. So after a little while, I decided to update to WordPress 5. And wow, is it a horrible update.

WordPress introduced a new post editor, that should make it easy to create posts. But doing so, they complete broke what was there before. And even that editor is full of really really stupid decisions. Check out this screenshot, which is not even of a full-screen window. The editor window is 610 pixels wide. On any screen size. I feel like my brain stopped when I seen this. Why? Who would come up with such a stupid decision. I have a 34 inch screen, and they force me to work in an area the size of a bigger mobile phone. And that’s not the only issue.

Things that were easily accessible before are now hidden. There is no toolbar on the code editor. Previews don’t work for me and so on. There is even a plugin for WordPress that will revert the editor to the old version. They did not even think to leave that option in it for people that will hate this half baked new one. If it wold not take so much work to switch to something else, I would think about it by now. I don’t like the direction WordPress is going at all.

Down at the Hallstatter see

I have already been to Hallstatt in Austria few times, and each time I was there, I wonder where these spot was. I did see few photo from it, but I could not find the spot where one could go down to the Hallstatter see to get the view. The reason is, that most of the area is private property, so you can’t get down.

But this time, I found the spot, and I also found the reason why I did not notice it before. It’s because each time before I was there in the Summer, and since this is a boat dock, there was always a boat docked here. And it blocked the view. But not this time.

This was the last shot I did during my visit to Hallstat last week. I would maybe do more, but I had problems with my tripod. One of the legs got loose and just detached. So after spending a bit of time trying to fix it, I just took few photos and packed it for the day.

This is a blend of three shots, all edited in Lightroom and then blended in Photoshop.

Snow covered Hallstatt

I visited Hallstatt in Austria few times before, but I always wanted to go back during winter, to get some nice photos of it covered with snow. And with a fellow photographer Pedro Kin (from pedrokinphotography.com) we planed to do a road trip there last Friday. But, not the amount of snow that fallen the last week was so big, that the roads into Hallstatt were closed. So we decided to postpone.

And we postponed it to yesterday, when we did the trip. And wow, there was still a lot of snow. We visited Hallstatt and a nearby lake Altausseer See. We got some nice photos, that I will share mine with you here on the blog. The biggest problem actually was to get to some places, as getting through a 1m or more of snow without sinking into it was not possible. Should have bought snow shoes:)

Today’s photo is a typical view of Hallstat, but this time with all the snow. It is a 2 shot panorama, each shot from three exposures. I was a bit lucky here, as for some reason the light on the church tower was off in one of the photos. As it always creates an overexposed area, I was quite happy how it looks without it. Shot’s combined into panorama in PTgui, edited in Photoshop.

Calm morning in Hallstatt

Let’s go with another very early morning photo. This one of course from Hallstatt in Austria. It’s again from the very famous spot there. I do have photo from different views, but since I have been here for the sunrise and sunset, the other ones are not that great. I will go definitively go back here, so next time I plan mostly to take photos of the other views :)

This is a two shot vertorama (but cropped down a lot), merged in Lightroom, finished in Photoshop.

Creating a panorama

Yes, it’s another panorama. They just work so well for landscape shots. And if you want to learn more on how to create panoramas, I have these articles for you:

Taking a panoramic shot is really easy, and while editing is a bit harder sometime, it’s usually worth it :)

Sunset panorama from Hallstatt

I took this photo while visiting Hallstatt last year. As it is in the middle of the Alps, the sun goes down quite early as it hides behind them. And this was taken right at that moment, when only some sunlight still lit up the peaks of the surrounding hills. It all looked really nice :)

As you can see, the sky right above Hallstatt was not that interesting. Just no golden color. But the clouds further away were stunning. So of course I went with a panorama, to get as much as I could into the shot :)

Not a winter photo from Hallstatt

So my plan for today was to go to Hallstatt in Austria to get some nice snow covered photos. And it all looked so promising. It snowed during the week and it looked all so great on the webcam they have there. So I made all the preparations, and just to be sure I checked the video again yesterday. And what would you know, it was warm there yesterday, so most of the snow disappeared.

I decided to move the visit by few weeks, and hopefully there will be more snow a bit later. But I already wanted to share a photo from Hallstatt today, so here is one. This one I took in summer last year, while I was there.

This is a blend of 5 exposures. The light on the church tower is so strong, that it was overexposed even in a -4EV exposure. Will try it with one even darker next time. Edited in Lightroom and Photoshop.
